October 9th, 2011
At the 2011 Discovery Cup tournament in Boyds, Maryland, the NJ Stallion-BEC Celtics U13G end a very competitive weekend leaving as Semifinalists. After winning their bracket in the Top Flight, the girls played a well fought match against FC VIRGINIA SYA ’98 (#2 Ranked in VA), only to lose the game after 2 scoreless OT periods, in PKS. The match would end in a 5-4 score in favor of FC VIRGINIA who would go on to win the tournament. The girls were hoping to meet nationally ranked ALBERTSON FURY ’98 in the FINAL, however, in the opposite bracket, the ALBERTSON FURY ’98 team lost in virtually the same fashion. The NJ Stallion girls put up strong performances in group play in three games; first against NJ rival, TOMS RIVER FUSION (#4 Ranked in NJ) by a score of 4-1, BALTIMORE BAYS ’98 (#2 Ranked in MD) 0-0, and most notably BETHESDA ’98 (#1 Ranked in MD, and #12 Ranked in Region I). The players although disappointed with not advancing to the Final, were held in high regard by Coach Rooney who praised their efforts and hard work, citing their raised competitive fire over an enjoyable weekend in Maryland.

A total of nine players were selected for the NJ ODP initial state pools. In the Under 13 age group: Alexis Delbiondo, Amy Harris, Lisa Kestelboym & Gemma Perez made initial state pool selection. For Alexis, Amy and Gemma, this is a repeat selection from their U12 ODP experience from last year. In the Under 14 age group: Kelly Ann Livingstone, Mackenzie McAvoy, Julia Homan, Claire Jamieson, and Meghan Marhan (GK), also made initial state pool selection.
For the U13G age group, the four NJ Stallion girls are among 78 players from the North & South of New Jersey. For the U14G age group, the five NJ Stallion players are among 92 players from the North & South of the state. In addition to the nine NJ Stallion girls, teammate, Samantha Coffey, who hails from the state of New York, continues her success in the NY State ODP pool. Samantha was elevated to the REGION I ODP Pool, after her successful trip to the REGION I Camp in Rhode Island this past summer.
New Jersey’s ODP tryouts saw hundreds of players for both the U13 and U14 age groups over two weekends in late August. Head Coach, Meredith Rooney, said of her players, “Whether they made the pool or not, I’m extremely proud of all of them. These girls will be trying out for so many of their activities as they get older, not just soccer. They need to get used to that kind of process, understand how it works, and learn from it.” The NJ Stallions Academy coaching and management staff are very proud of the players. The club will be in full support of their efforts as the girls work hard to prepare for the final pool tryouts that come up in April of 2012.
