At the 2011 Discovery Cup tournament in Boyds, Maryland, the NJ Stallion-BEC Celtics U13G end a very competitive weekend leaving as Semifinalists. After winning their bracket in the Top Flight, the girls played a well fought match against FC VIRGINIA SYA ’98 (#2 Ranked in VA), only to lose the game after 2 scoreless OT periods, in PKS. The match would end in a 5-4 score in favor of FC VIRGINIA who would go on to win the tournament. The girls were hoping to meet nationally ranked ALBERTSON FURY ’98 in the FINAL, however, in the opposite bracket, the ALBERTSON FURY ’98 team lost in virtually the same fashion. The NJ Stallion girls put up strong performances in group play in three games; first against NJ rival, TOMS RIVER FUSION (#4 Ranked in NJ) by a score of 4-1, BALTIMORE BAYS ’98 (#2 Ranked in MD) 0-0, and most notably BETHESDA ’98 (#1 Ranked in MD, and #12 Ranked in Region I). The players although disappointed with not advancing to the Final, were held in high regard by Coach Rooney who praised their efforts and hard work, citing their raised competitive fire over an enjoyable weekend in Maryland.

A total of nine players were selected for the NJ ODP initial state pools. In the Under 13 age group: Alexis Delbiondo, Amy Harris, Lisa Kestelboym & Gemma Perez made initial state pool selection. For Alexis, Amy and Gemma, this is a repeat selection from their U12 ODP experience from last year. In the Under 14 age group: Kelly Ann Livingstone, Mackenzie McAvoy, Julia Homan, Claire Jamieson, and Meghan Marhan (GK), also made initial state pool selection.

For the U13G age group, the four NJ Stallion girls are among 78 players from the North & South of New Jersey. For the U14G age group, the five NJ Stallion players are among 92 players from the North & South of the state. In addition to the nine NJ Stallion girls, teammate, Samantha Coffey, who hails from the state of New York, continues her success in the NY State ODP pool. Samantha was elevated to the REGION I ODP Pool, after her successful trip to the REGION I Camp in Rhode Island this past summer.

New Jersey’s ODP tryouts saw hundreds of players for both the U13 and U14 age groups over two weekends in late August. Head Coach, Meredith Rooney, said of her players, “Whether they made the pool or not, I’m extremely proud of all of them. These girls will be trying out for so many of their activities as they get older, not just soccer. They need to get used to that kind of process, understand how it works, and learn from it.” The NJ Stallions Academy coaching and management staff are very proud of the players. The club will be in full support of their efforts as the girls work hard to prepare for the final pool tryouts that come up in April of 2012.

The U12G make it to the SEMIFINALS @ 2011 FC Delco Players’ Cup in the Top Division. In oppressive weather conditions, the U12G battled in 5 games in a 48 hour period, notching wins over LDC UNITED GALAXY (Ranked #3 in Pennsylvania), GARDEN CITY CENTENNIALS WILDCATS (NY East), including an exciting Quarterfinal Match over #4 North Carolina Ranked PITT GREENVILLE ’98 PGSA STARS that went to penalty kicks. The group stage match vs YMS EXPLOSION ’98, the #1 team in REGION I, was arguably the most exciting; a 4-3 Loss for the NJ STALLIONS-BEC Celtic Girls that was 2-0 at halftime, seeing YMS EXPLOSION ’98 coming back to tie in the 2nd half. With the score 4-3 in the closing minutes, the NJ STALLIONS girls had 2 corner kick opportunities that did not find the back of the net. In the end, the Semifinal was a loss to NJ Regional Rival, FC Sting Charge. Overall, the performance was the best showing the NJ Stallions’ girls have put up in the 3 years attending the event in the Top Division.

The BEC Celtics win the top division CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY at the 2011 MANHATTAN KICKOFF CLASSIC! In the 4 games including the Final, the U12G had “0″ Goals Against, earning 4 consecutive “shut-outs” earning victories over BEACHSIDE OF CT, EAST MEADOW SC STARS 98, FC SOMERS CYCLONES, and PAGS-SOUTH HAMPTON SA CRUSH in the final.

Coaches Meredith Rooney & Glenn Livingstone were extremely pleased by everyone on the roster. The team has been diligently training 3 x a week since December. After 2 successful Indoor performances playing up in age, the tournament win at MANHATTAN KICKOFF is the best reward the girls could have earned after all their hard work; and an even better way to kickoff the U12G Spring Season.

Ball movement was excellent. Player movement on and off the ball by all the players was terrific. Above all, the coaches were extremely pleased by their will to compete in tough conditions at Tibbets Park in Yonkers thru the rain and cold. 11 Goals were scored over 4 Shut-Out games, by 7 different players. The shut out performance was underscored by an excellent performance by NJ Stallions’ Goalie, Meghan Marhan. Congratulations girls! Good luck this Spring!

The NJ Stallions-BEC Celtics U12G team wraps up its winter training season next week. The players have been training 3 times a week since early December, including co-ed sessions with some of the older boys at NJ Stallions Academy. Some highlights of the winter include very strong showings at 2 Indoor events in January & February. At the TSF MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY indoor event, the U12G played up in age with U13G teams in a 7v7 format. Coach Meredith Rooney and Coach Glenn Livingstone took small sided squads that played very well, including a match where they played ‘each other’. A rare opportunity for the girls to face up against their teammates in an event, had them playing hard to an eventual 1-0 game! (bragging rights went to Coach Rooney!!). The BEC girls also put up wins against the TSF Academy U13G, and an all-star Monroe-Woodbury U13G team as well.

More recently, on Saturday Feb 19th, the girls were in the QUICKSTRIKE MAKE-A-WISH 9v9 tournament and again performed well playing up in the U13G age group; winning 3 of the 4 games they played. Wins against, NIRVANA LEGACY, EAST HUDSON ACADEMY, and most notably the QUICKSTRIKE U13G made the trip memorable. The one loss in the event was to the BAY SHORE U13G, losing 3-1 but outshooting their opponent in the process. Overall, the coaching staff is very pleased with their hard work this winter. Next up will be the MANHATTAN KICKOFF CLASSIC, and afterwards, outdoor training begins in mid-March.

In their very first Fall State Cup game, the NJ Stallions-BEC U12G earned their first victory in a State Cup tournament. After a 1st round “bye”, the U12 Girls battled a very talented U12G team in Holmdel NJX Milan. The BEC girls have met NJX Milan twice before in the past year. Having won both those previous match-ups, BEC was looking to continue that success. The NJX Milan team has improved steadily since BEC first met them. At half time, the score was 1-0, with NJX Milan still showing strong signs of competitive play. Throughout the 2nd half, NJ Stallions-BEC kept up the pressure, and finished the match with 2 more goals, for a 3-0 victory. Moving forward, the coaching staff wants to see continued hard work in their practice sessions. Next up for the U12 girls is their trip to the Discovery Cup in Maryland for Columbus Day Weekend, followed by the 3rd round State Cup match versus the winner of the 2nd round FC Copa Celeste vs Haddonfield Lightning game.

At the NJSA Ultimate Labor Day Tournament, the BEC Celtics U12G make it to the Finals in a losing effort against the Marlton-Seneca U12G from South Jersey. The game was in effect a re-match from a Semi-Final game at the CENTRAL JERSEY INVITATIONAL @ Fort Dix, a match that BEC Celtics won over Marlton-Seneca in PKs. The Final at NJSA was scoreless at halftime, where the BEC Celtics had a very good showing in the 1st half. 50 minutes into regulation, the game was still scoreless. Marlton-Seneca scored the first goal of the game off a beautiful one-touch volley from the top of the 18 yard line. Although the BEC girls had several chances late in the second half, the Marlton-Seneca team kept the pressure on, and went on to win the Final 2-0. The BEC players were disappointed in the final result, but on this day the Marlton-Seneca team would not be denied.
