Soccer is by far the most popular sport in the world. A big part of that popularity is due to the accessibility of the sport. It costs very little to play both casually and professionally. This is true even for kids starting out. Here is what a child will need:
Soccer cleats
For children under eight or nine, a normal pair of athletic shoes will be fine. Once they get a little older, they will need cleats. Unlike in some other sports, the cleats are short and made of rubber for the sole purpose of improved grip.
Shin guards
Soccer is very much a contact sport. The most likely point of impact are the shins. These guards reduce the chance of injury although there can still be some bruising and pain with a heavy impact like a missed kick.
Water bottle
As with all other physical activity, it is very important to stay hydrated. Soccer players should have a big water bottle and drink water before, during and after a game. It is easy to get caught up in the game and forget. Younger children should have marked on the bottle to indicate how much to drink each break.
Clothes
Soccer clothes are sometimes provided by the team if a specific uniform is required. There will, however, be a need to get socks, shorts and a full set of clothes for practices.
